Introduction
Item 028691 from Herpa is a new HO scale Audi R8 Spyder. This model is one of 158 Audi models and one of 20 R8s in Herpa's catalogue.
New type! The new Audi R8 Spyder enhances Herpa’s comprehensive sports car range. First we release the vehicle in vegas yellow and myth black with pearleffect.

This new 2017 Spyder is powered by the 540 hp 5.2-liter V-10 powering a seven-speed dual clutch transmission allowing acceleration of 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds. The body is manufacturer with a higher percentage of carbon fiber for higher strength with lighter weight.

In the box
This model is fully assembled and secured in a clear plastic cradle in Herpa's box. These boxes don't look like much but are extremely effective in protecting the model; other models have arrived with their shipping box crushed and abused by the postal service(s).

I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. Some parts are molded in color. Herpa's assembly is high quality, as is their molding. Parts are crisp and smooth. There is no flash, mold seams, sink marks nor ejector marks. Recessed lines represent the doors, hood and rear door.

Detail
Herpa puts a great deal of detail in their small models. While the tires have fine tread groove detail around the shoulders Herpa no longer molds it on the tread. The tires set around finely detailed rims. They appear to be painted in chrome.

While I did not tug on them it appears the side mirrors are individually attached.

What about the rear view mirror? Herpa has made a tiny one and mounted it on the windshield. Inside the car is a detailed cockpit with bucket seats and a dashboard, console, steering wheel and head rests. The big V10 is partially buried in the body with only some components peaking out behind the cockpit. It should be easy to add figured into the Spyder.

The car body seems to be a one-piece part with openings that the cockpit snaps into, hence the side intakes and grille. Herpa represents the headlamps and brake lights with clear and tinted transparent lenses. A sharply molded grille fronts the car. Fine chrome paint lines simulate chrome trim. Windshield wipers are molded into the combing below the windshield.

The model chassis a basic suggestion, made with a low relief undercarriage.

That level of detail is quite enjoyable to look at.

Finish
Painted vegasgelb / vegas yellow, Herpa's Spyder is a striking model. Their paint is opaque but does not obscure detail. The interior is molded in color.

Fine silver paint shows the chrome strips around the grille and windshield. The Audi emblems are chromed, front and rear. An incredibly small yet crisp and legible "R8" is also printed on the rear. Herpa does not use decals.

A model's finish can make or break it and this Spyder is finished to a high quality.

Drive Away
This small Spyder is big on appeal. Herpa's molding and assembly is first-rate, as is their paint. It features fine detail inside and out, including authentic transparent lenses for the headlights and brake lights. My only minor gripe is, as usual, a lack of tread groove detail.

Contemporary model railroaders, auto collectors and HO-1/87 diorama makers should be very happy with this tiny R8 Spyder. Recommended.

SUMMARY
Highs: Sharp clean molding and assembly and exceptional painting. This little Spyder sports detail above its scale, such as a rear view mirror and an interior.
Lows: No tread groove detail.
Verdict: Contemporary model railroaders, auto collectors and HO-1/87 diorama makers should be very happy with this tiny R8 Spyder.

I'm a professional pilot with a degree in art. My first model was an AMT semi dump truck. Then Monogram's Lunar Lander right after the lunar landing. Next, Revell's 1/32 Bf-109G...cried havoc and released the dogs of modeling! My interests--if built before 1900, or after 1955, then I proba...
