released this Volvo FH 16 Gl. XL low-bed semitrailer with Wirtgen Cold Milling Machine W 250 i (Rhineland-Palatinate / Windhagen)
set as Item 310329
. An attention magnet, it features three detailed models with "action" features: semi-tractor; telescoping semi-trailer; Wirtgen cold milling machine W 250 i. Herpa
describes this model thus:
As a top innovation, Herpa is presenting the Wirtgen asphalt milling machine W250i on a Volvo FH low-bed semitrailer. The large device was elaborately and delicately designed by the Herpa designers. The fold-down roof of the control station is included with the model in an erected form and as a folded-down version. These devices are transported and delivered on the company's own low-loaders in the Wirtgen design.
Let's take a walkaround of this set.
Wirtgen Cold Milling Machine W 250 i
Who isn't fascinated by heavy-duty complex mechanical monsters devouring the ground? I am still fascinated with graders, pans, and backhoes. These mighty milling machines are dramatic to watch.
Instead of subjecting you to my usual description of the Wirtgen Cold Milling Machine W 250 i
, I provide you a link to the company's Technical Specification brochure, available via Click here for additional images for this review

Volvo FH XLThe Volvo FH is a heavy truck range produced by Swedish Volvo Truck Corporation. Introduced in late 1993 as FH12 and FH16, production still continues with the now the second generation of FH range model lineup. FH stands for Forward control High cab where numbers denominate engine capacity in litres. The FH range is one of the most successful truck series ever having sold more than 400,000 units worldwide.
The Volvo FH series are modular and offer many configurations on the chassis. Different combinations of cabs, engines, drivetrains, wheelbases and suspensions can be set upon a tractor or rigid frame. The Globetrotter XL cab has extra height providing more storage space and plenty of headroom. Two people can sleep comfortably.
In August 2008 Volvo launched an upgrade to FH series for driver comfort and usability. In 2011 the new 750 hp version of the D16 was presented to the market. This engine began delivery to customers around New Year 2012.
The FH16 truck is powered by Volvo's D16C,E,G(16.1 L) inline 6 turbocharged intercooled diesel engine which transmits power via Volvo transmissions. Four main and several subtypes are available: 12 speed semi-automatic (I-shift), 14- and 16 speed synchro manual, and the 6 speed automatic Powertronic systems. FH can tackle Gross Combination Weight of up to 100 tons. Volvo lists the following features for the series:
* Wheelbase from 3 to 6.7 m
* Rigid or tractor
The Volvo FH can be specified with leaf springs of parabolic or conventional type. Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) features leaf springs and air suspension.
The following is what Volvo thinks of their truck, per their website:
The shape of the Volvo FH16 cab is smoother around the edges. And the unique Volvo FH16 grille has a silver finish, hinting that this is something extra.
Typical areas of use for the Volvo FH16 are long haul transport, building and construction transport, and heavy transport.
Asia/Pacific, Europe, Middle East/Africa and Brazil.
The feeling of evolution is present in the Volvo FH16 cab. It’s different from everything else – yet very familiar. The colours, materials and trims are unmistakably Volvo FH16.

Nooteboom flatbed semi-trailers
With the Nooteboom TELETRAILER flatbed semi-trailers any self-supporting long load, from concrete and steel structures to rotor blades, can be transported with the greatest efficiency and at the lowest possible transport costs.
These semi-trailers feature a flat, extendible load floor and hydraulically forced turntable steering. The very large steering angle makes the manoeuvrability of the OVB TELETRAILERS exceptional. Moreover, this hydraulic turntable steering ensures the maintenance costs are very low and tyre wear is kept to a minimum.
Patented, pre-cambered load floor.
On every vehicle in the TELETRAILER programme Nooteboom employs the unique concept of pre-cambered beams for which an international patent has been granted. With this special camber the load floor stays perfectly flat when retracted. This is of practical benefit when for instance, loading containers. In unloaded, extended position the chassis is slightly arched (cambered) so there is hardly any sagging of the load surface. This concept also guarantees that the load floor can be retracted or extended without difficulty.
Nooteboom offers a wide range of flatbed trailers in various versions to perfectly meet any specific transport requirement:
2 up to 7 axles
Self-tracking or hydraulically steered axles
Payload of up to approx. 120 tonnes
Air suspension or hydropneumatic suspension
Fixed or single/double/triple/quadruple extendible floor
Flat load floor, or with gooseneck**
In the Box
This is a amazing set made up of three individual models: the Volvo FH 16 GI. XL tractor; Nooteboom teletrailer; Wirtgen W 250i. Herpa
currently offers 200 Volvos, seven FH 16 GI. models, five Nooteboom trailers, and seven Wirtgen models and accessory sets.
The three models are fully assembled (almost - read on) and packed in a light plastic form-fitted tray secured in a light cardboard box with a cellophane display window and opening ends. Included are two packages with several sprues of optional unattached parts:
• Side view mirrors
• Extra Wirtgen windows
Good news! Herpa
has included an instructional sheet for the Wirtgen W250i - thank you, Herpa
Bad news. Herpa
did not include any instructions for using the active features of the tractor or trailer.
Volvo FH 16 GI. XL Rigid Tractor 6x4
.I cannot find any flaws in the molding nor assembly. The exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods and panels. The chassis is very detailed with the frame, battery box, fuel tanks, transmission, drive shaft, differential, axles, and suspension; topside is a fifth-wheel and the detailed cab. The front axle can be made steerable with a Herpa steering kit. Each of the 10 wheels has rubber tires and plastic hubcaps. They display good detail.
The windshield and windows are free of distortion. You can see the nice interior. Inside of the cab is detail worth popping the cab off, with bucket seats, steering wheel, console, stick shift, and dashboard detailing. The cab tilts forward to expose a detailed engine.
Individual clear lenses and tinted clear lenses simulate the headlights, signals, tail lights and beacons. The windshield wipers are part of the separate black chrome combing around the windshield.
Four mirrors can be applied to the cab, a pair of side view mirrors, and two mirrors to reveal the blind areas in front of, and to the right side of, the cab. These are delicate parts on their own sprue. The plastic is slightly flexible. Carefully cut those from the parts tree or you can remove the mounting pegs; carefully fit them into the specific pre-made holes and slots. The mirror that extends to the front of the truck, it is not obvious how to mount it. Perhaps Herpa
should provide some mounting instruction in the box or on-line?
This telescoping trailer unit is a respectable model on its own. The underside has basic detail. Disappointingly, the taillights and flashers are not even painted on. That's a perpetual complaint of mine. It does have a tinted clear flasher beacon, though.
The cargo deck is made to telescope between the rear platform and the front dolly. This deck is impressive with simulated wooden planking. Wood grain detail is printed on the planks. Along the sides are slots for the mooring stakes.
Remember my comment about lack of an instruction sheet? Eight separate stakes snap into the trailer.
Wirtgen W 250i
Here is an amazing multi-faceted model. First, you can change the operation cabin from raised/operational, to lowered/travel mode. Next, all four caterpillar units can be pivoted side-to-side and up-and-down. Next, the conveyor belt bridge can be moved, too. Simulated pistons raise and lower with the conveyor, attaching it to the milling machine, along with flexible tubing. Other detail includes the crew area with seats and control consoles. Underneath the vehicle is a milling cylinder.
Two mirrors with reflective surfaces are provided to attach to the machine.
This vehicle is heavier than I expect for plastic. Perhaps part is die-cast metal?
Livery and Markings
These models are painted and lettered for Wirtgen. The tractor is simply marked with "Wirtgen." The milling machine features more elaborate markings. Nothing is printed on the trailer.
does a remarkable job reproducing markings. They do not use decals, all lettering is printed on. Herpa chromed the Volvo logos. All the decorations are top notch.
If you miss this set on a layout or display shelf then you need to have your eyes checked - it is a fascinating set of specialized heavy duty transport.
Whether you consider the models as a set or as individual components, these models are impressive. Sharp molding, detailed parts, positionable features, remarkable printing, all combine into an impressive set. My criticisms are the lack of tinted lenses for the trailer brake lights, and the lack of instructions for mounting the details partsor using the moveable features.
Regardless, this is a very imposing set. Modern HO modelers and collectors of modern heavy duty haulage should find this a desirable set. Heartily recommended.
Please remember to let vendors and manufacturers know that you saw this model here, on
