HistoryThe 2-6-0 wheel arrangement or Mogul was first developed in the early 1860's as a successor to the 4-4-0 or American Standard wheel arrangement. Several North American railroads can claim being the first to have a Mogul, however the distinction goes to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N). The L&N Moguls had a single-axle truck. According to my very old copy of C&O Power the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad owned six different classes of Moguls. Two of the C6 class Moguls #1 and #2 came from the Island Creek Coal Company to the Chesapeake & Ohio during an acquisition of that railroad by the C&O. Moguls on the C&O were considered "odd lot locomotives", coming onto the property by acquisition of smaller lines. The C&O of 1915 was very modern and had progressed to 2-8-2's, and 2-6-6-2's for freight and 4-6-2's for passenger power. Smaller and older locomotives were assigned as switchers or as local power. Numbers 1 and #2 were built by Alco-Richmond in 1907 and 1908 and became C&O #47 and #48 ending up as # 425 and #426 before being retired in the late 1920's. Principle dimensions were 56" drivers, 19"x24" cylinders, 132,000 lb engine weight, 24,330 lb tractive effort, 185 lb boiler pressure.
The ModelAthearn / Roundhouse released this upgraded model a few years ago and the model is now listed as discontinued by Horizon Hobbies. Perhaps they will reissue the Mogul and other Roundhouse steam locomotives in the future. The model represents a Baldwin product of the turn of the century built primarily for shortlines.
The locomotive is decorated in an imaginary C&O black, red, orange and gray paint scheme and lettered for #425 a class C6 2-6-0. The prototype #425 was most likely painted black with a gray or graphite smoke box front and light yellow cab window frames. The locomotive weighs around 6 oz, is 8" long, can go around a 15” radius curve and number 4 turnout. It will perform much better on a minimum of 18" radius curve when pushing a 40' freight car. The under frame is die-cast metal with 56" driving wheels and a small can motor providing power to the #2 driver through reduction gearing. Current collection is via two copper strips rubbing the back of the #1 and #3 insulated drivers on both the left and right sides. For improved current collection add insulated wipers to the eight tender wheels. Gearing is very good and the simple metal side rods are attached to the drivers using a plastic type pin. There may be future trouble there as the plastic ages. Two traction tires are attached to the #2 driver. It comes off if the model is pushed with the power off. The locomotive detailing is very well done. The domes, piping, air compressor, headlight, smoke stack, air tanks, hand rails, and bell are separately attached. The model comes with plug in DCC capability in the tender. Opening the tender with all the delicate detail looks like it will be a challenge. Holes are provided in the tender for sound installation. Directional lighting is provided by two LED's in the boiler and tender headlights. Testing it on my seven foot module I was able to easily move an eight car train of three 28' tank cars, four 36' box cars and caboose. Throttle response was excellent using straight DC power, it moved along at less than 1mph.
