by: Frederick Boucher [ JPTRR ]

Introduction
Mercedes-Benz Actros Streamspace refrigerated box semitrailer "Alfred Talke" from model vehicle master Herpa is a semi-truck in HO scale. It is Item 306898. The model is factory assembled with injection molded styrene and rubber-plastic hybrid tires. At the time of this revioew Herpa catalogies over 630 Mercedes-Benz models, 41 Actros Streamspace models, and 6 of Alfred Talke.

Herpa advertises;
New type! This Mercedes-Benz Actros Streamspace with refrigerated trailer provides variety in Herpa’s Alfred Talke fleet. Next to silo, tank and container vehicles the company from Hürth now also operates refrigerated trucks to transport temperature-controlled goods. The model is released with the new faithfully reproduced Schmitz cooling unit.

Let's walk-around and kick the tires.

Mercedes-Benz Actros 2011
Developed after 2600 hours in wind tunnels and after 10’s of millions of kilometers of testing on in real-life on the road, Mercedes-Benz 2011 Actros:
…is the first and, to date, only truck which has been developed rigorously to comply with the Euro VI emissions standard.* The new Mercedes-Benz BlueEfficiency Power engine generation has been developed specifically for use in Europe and, from the outset, will meet Euro VI requirements. The first member of the new engine family to be in the spotlight is the Mercedes-Benz OM 471 six-cylinder in-line engine. **

Power is harnessed through a new twelve-speed transmission. For the driver a modular design allows seven different cabs and four roof designs.*** StreamSpace is the second largest and has four variants.

Mercedes-Benz Actros is a heavy duty truck introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1996. There are 36 different Actros models, normally used for long-distance haulage, heavy duty distribution haulage and construction haulage.[1] Chassis available are 2 x 6 and 2 x 4 tractor or rigid, 4 x 6 haulage model, and a 4 x 8 version. It is available in weights starting at 18 tonnes and is powered by a V6 or V8 cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler.[2] They feature the Telligent® safety system.[2]

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros was introduced by Mercedes Benz during the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover and entered full-production in July 2008. This third generation truck was equipped with a choice of two BlueTec developed engines - 12L V6 diesel delivering a power range from 320 to 480 hp and 16L V8 diesel producing a power range from 510 to 600 hp - fitted with the further-developed PowerShift transmission. The truck also featured level & roll control systems, a new Telligent brake system & stability control and Telligent maintenance system. [3]

Technical Description. Actros have 5 different variants: Standard height, Low frame, Low Liner, Tipper, and Concrete mixer. Basic dimensions are:

Overall length -- 8790 mm (28.83 feet)
Wheelbase -- 5100 mm (16.73 feet)
GTW -- 18 - 44 tons.

All of the above information may be unnecessary for this review but it was fun looking it up.

The Model
Herpa's Mercedes-Benz Actros Streamspace with refrigerated semitrailer is packed in a form-fitted cradle held inside a carton with a clear film window.

Except for a few pieces, the models are completely assembled. Four mirrors are optional pieces for the modeler.

Molding and assembly are first-rate. I found no noticeable flash, ejector marks, seams nor de-sprue burrs. The models are made of injection molded plastic, and plastic-rubber hybrid tires.

The sharply molded exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods, panels and the grille. Door handles are flush and are the tabs that hold the cab interior in the cab shell. Cab components are molded in both glossy and satin parts. Herpa included an instruction sheet about how to open the tractor to show off the engine.

Tractor Detail!
The cab superstructure sets upon a detailed two-axle chassis. The windshield and windows are free of distortion and you can see the nice interior. It is worth popping the cab off to see. Soft tires mounted on detailed hubs support the model. The front wheels can be made to steer if you use Herpa’s extra steering set. Herpa engineered the soft plastic tires to slip over the rims. Herpa created a detailed model of the chassis: gearbox, frame, fuel tanks, air tanks, axles, springs and suspension.

The cab interior is a single molded piece featuring detailed seats, dashboard and console, and a separate steering wheel. It is reasonable visible through the large cab windows. The windshield is detailed with a separate part with the wiper blades.

The cab is detailed with Actros’ aerodynamically rounded design and styled grille. This tractor features the streamlined fairing atop the cab and skirts along the chassis. Not applied by Herpa are four individual mirrors: a pair of side view mirrors and two mirrors to reveal the blind areas in front of, and to the side of the vehicle. These are delicate parts on their own sprue. The plastic is slightly flexible. Cut them from the parts tree and carefully fit them into the specific pre-made holes and slots. These holes are very small and while some are obvious, mounting the front and side mirrors are not readily apparent.

The chassis behind the cab is nicely detailed. Note the tread pattern plate behind the cab, the intakes running from the top of the cab rear to the chassis, the fuel tanks, and the fifth wheel detail.

Herpa uses clear and tinted lenses for their lights.

Herpa put a turbocharged intercooled diesel engine under the cab. You can see it because the cab is made to tip. Herpa includes an instruction sheet that explains how to tip the cab without braking or dislodging anything. Nice!

Refridgerated Trailer Details
The chassis has basic detail. A spare tire is held in a 'cage' below the tank.

Three axles mount six wheels with tread on the tires, and nut and bolt detail on the hubs.

The Schmitz cooling unit is attached to the box trailer. It has nice detail although the door detail on the other end is slightly molded. The trailer has extendable landing gear.

This semitruck makes a striking model with its high level of detail.

Livery, paint, and instructions
Herpa decorates the model with molded color and painted components. This Alfred Talke livery does not have extensive lining or lettering. What there is is painted on, very sharp and opaque, and does not obscure detail. The Mercedes-Benz star and Actros logo are chromed.

It amazes me how smooth, sharp, and fine the decorating of Herpa models are. When looking at the fine lettering, consider that the cab is only as big as half of my thumb! This is paint--Herpa does not use decals.

Conclusion
Herpa's Mercedes-Benz Actros Streamspace refrigerated box semitrailer "Alfred Talke" is an impressive model. It's high level of detail compliments the high standard of paint and finish. The positional features allow the modeler versatility of display. Clear and tinted lenses enhance authenticity. Tire treads and hub detail does, too.

I do not have much to criticize and praise Herpa for including instructions about how to expose the engine.

This model will make fine addition to collectors, 1/87 automobile collectors and modelers, and HO railroad layouts. Recommended.
