The Haanpää Group...is a Finnish logistic company from Oulu with logistic services for liquid chemicals and materials. Among the most important customers is the Scandinavian pulp and paper industry. The founder Jussi Haanpää stems from Haapavesi in North Finland. In 1949, he purchased his first truck and began to transport wood. In 1996, the company was restructured. Today, the company owns over 500 trucks for various tasks. The all-new designed model trailer features authentic prints.
Volvo FH GL
Volvo is one of the largest truck manufacturers in the world. They are known for their leading edge designs. Their FM truck is powered by Volvo's tested six-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel engines which transmit their power to the wheels via Volvo's new automated 12-speed I-Shift transmission. Volvo lists the following features for the series:
* Wheelbase from 3 to 6.7 m
* Rigid or tractor
* D11C engine; 330, 370, 410 or 450 hp
* D13B engine; 360, 400 or 440 hp
* D13C engine; 380, 420, 460 or 500 hp
* Several comfortable cabs
The Volvo FM series are modular and offer many configurations on the chassis. Different combinations of cabs, engines, drivetrains, wheelbases and suspensions can be set upon a tractor or rigid frame.
Volvo FH GL Chrome-Plated Chemical Tank Semitrailer "Haanpää"Herpa currently lists 47 Volvo FH GL trucks amongst their 143 Volvo models. This semi-tanker truck is one of 218 offered tank and bulk cargo trucks.
I have not been much of a fan of semi-trucks. Then I saw Herpa models of them in Herpa catalogs. Maybe it was the exotic look of European designs and liveries, I was immediately interested in these models.
Herpa securely packs this tanker semi-trailer in a form-fitted plastic cradle inside Herpa’s red cardstock carton with a display window. Molded finger slots make in easy extract the cradle and get to the extra parts, two side view mirrors and two blind spot mirrors. The model is almost completely factory assembled.
The casting and molding quality is high, featuring recessed or raised panel lines as appropriate, with no flash, mold marks, nor sprue attachment burrs. However, faint seam lines run along the fuel tanks.
First, the tractor. The cab interior is a single molded piece featuring detailed seats, dashboard and console, and a separate steering wheel. It is reasonably visible through the large cab windows. Your driver’s eyes are shaded by a sunshade. The windshield is detailed with wiper blades and black chrome. The cab is detailed with Volvo’s aerodynamically rounded design and styled grille. All of this sets atop a very detailed 4X4 chassis. On the fifth wheel is a delicately molded handle. The frame holds a pair of fuel tanks. The soft plastic (or rubber) tires have fine tread detail. It appears this model can be fitted with a separate optional steering set for the front axle. Each wheel hub has lug detail. Herpa uses clear and tinted lenses for their lights.
The four mirrors are a pair of side view mirrors, and two mirrors to reveal the blind areas in front of, and to the right side of, the cab. These are delicate parts on their own sprue. The plastic is slightly flexible. Carefully cut them from the parts tree or you can remove the mounting pegs; carefully fit them into the specific pre-made holes and slots. This can be tricky--I spent about 20 minutes trying to secure the right mirror. These holes are very small and while the side view mirror holes are apparent, mounting the blindspot mirrors are not readily obvious. The frontal mirror fits into a slot under the visor. A small instructional diagram would be helpful.
The 32,000 liter capacity chemical tank is set upon a heavy frame. A storage cage is suspended below in front of the wheels. A pair of spare wheels is held within. The landing gear does not extend. Piping detail lines the lower side of the tank. Molded to these are bases for the self-adhesive placards to be affixed to. A detailed rear ladder provides access to the detailed walkways atop the tank.
The trailer has a locking pin to attach it to the tractor fifth wheel.
Livery and Markings
Except for the chrome plating of the tank the model is molded in color. Haanpää's company logo and other information is crisply printed, as is the Volvo logo on the grille.
The placards are self-adhesive and easy to peel off the sheet. There are five types of hazmat depicted: Benzin, Methanol, Aceton, Heckstossstange, and Schlauchrohrkasten re/li.
ConclusionThe quality of molding and assembly is very high. The adhesive placard stickers are a nice touch, as are the separate mirrors. The fidelity of detail and lenses for lights are impressive. Recommended!
