Price: 22,50 EUR (about $29)
Brochure: Herpa Cars & Trucks 2012 / 07-08
The Mercedes-Benz Actros is a heavy duty truck introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1995. It is normally used for long-distance haulage, heavy duty distribution haulage and construction haulage. It is available in weights starting at 18 tons and is powered by a V6 or V8 cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler. Daimler Trucks/Lorries launched the version II of the Actros in 2002, and the version III in 2011. The Mercedes Benz Actros is basically equipped with two types of engines, the OM 501 LA-541 and the OM 502 LA-542. The second Actros generation comes with an electronic sequential gearbox called the Telligent Gearbox. It uses the principle used in some earlier Mercedes-Benz tractors, using the gearshift lever to command a pneumatically actuated system that changes the gears.
THE BOX AND PACKAGING
The Herpa Mercedes-Benz Actros S ´08 transport container "fire brigade" truck comes packed in a plastic form fitting carrier which is inserted in a light paperboard box that opens on both ends with a clear plastic viewing window on the front of the package.
The Mercedes-Benz Actros S ´08 transport container "fire brigade" truck comes fully assembled and painted. I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. The exterior is smooth and shiny and features fine recessed lines for doors and panels. Its chassis has nice molded details which show the individual drive shafts, differentials, compressors, spare tire, leaf springs, etc. The windshield and all other glass areas are free of distortion and scratches. Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights however there are no lenses for the taillights. Clear blue plastic was used in the warning lights on the roof of the cab as well as on the rear of the transport container. The wheels have black plastic tires with nice tread pattern detail and come with silver rims. None of the mirrors have a silver color to them to simulate reflective glass. The interior is very basic and features seats, steering wheel and dashboard. The windshield wipers are part of the black molding at the base of the windshield. The cab tilts forward to expose a basic detailed engine. There are four mirrors which come as separate pieces that need to be applied to the cab. There are two side view mirrors and two mirrors that mount on the right side of the cab to reveal the blind areas on the right side and the front area of the truck. The hydraulic cylinders and the boom are moveable which allows the truck and container to be shown in many different positions which is a nice effect for using the vehicle in a setting or just to have it displayed other than just in the box. This is a small scale and life-like model for adult collectors, not a toy! Not suitable for children under 14 years.
THE TRANSPORT CONTAINER:
The container features one roller blind on each side as well clear blue plastic for the warning lights on the rear of the transport container. The finish on the container is the same quality as that on the truck. It is very nicely done and I did not find any flaws or other imperfections. The container is one solid piece with no moveable parts other than the rollers on the bottom. The container features no opening doors. The container can be removed from the truck and displayed on its own. The container comes off of the truck and detached from the boom with ease. I did however find it a little difficult to return the container to its original position on the truck. It does take a little manipulation to get it to fit correctly and securely.
The model body is painted in a thin smooth glossy finish. The molding, the interior and the underside is molded in black. The Mercedes-Benz logo is chromed upon the front of the cab. There are no decals in place on this set as Herpa does not use decals. The markings are all painted on and the amount of fine detail is very impressive. The model only comes available in the one color scheme.
This 1/87 scale Mercedes-Benz Actros S ´08 transport container "fire brigade" truck is a nicely done model with fine plastic detail and great finishing. It has clear lenses for headlights and warning lights and detailed tires. The underside is very nicely detailed. This model should please modern model railroaders, railroad diorama builders, and scale truck/car collectors. I would have no hesitation recommending this model, as well as other Herpa models, to others. This is a small scale and life-like model for adult collectors, not a toy! Not suitable for children under 14 years.
